Tonight’s new moon in Leo is a reprieve from the intensity that we have been experiencing collectively. While it’s a fiery new moon, because Leo rules the heart, we are moved by an internal calling, a calling of love.
Happy Summer Solstice friends! The solstice goes exact today at 5:44pm EDT, ringing in the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere as we rejoice in the beginning of summer. The ancients believed that the solstice was a time when the veils between the worlds thinned and this year we also have a solar eclipse on the night of the solstice, which happens about every 40 years or so, and adds a potent punch to this already magical time.
Tonight we have the new moon in Gemini, adding to the already active planetary alignments for the month. With four planets retrograde including Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto, this normally light-hearted moon is transformed into a far more inner-moving energy than you would expect from the sign of the Twins. That is the nature of retrograde planets in general, they reveal the ‘other side’ of our reality by bringing to the surface what is normally hidden from view.
While the world swirls in the chaos brought about by Covid19, we can take a look at the stars to see what they have to say about what we are experiencing as a collective. Tomorrow night there is a new moon in Taurus. Usually when the moon passes through the sign of the Bull, it’s considered an auspicious time. First of all, the moon likes to be in Taurus, it’s exalted there, this is because earthy Taurus is said to emphasize all the best lunar qualities — fertility, nurturing, grounding. The moon, which is a watery planet, feeds the earthiness of Taurus and from there luscious new things can grow. Through the rulership of Venus over Taurus, there is also an emphasis on balance and harmony. So by itself, this Moon has the ripeness of fertility through which life is created.
The new moon in Aries tomorrow is coming to us on the heels of some quite intense planetary alignments, that reflect the state of our collective experience with the world around us — as above, so below. Just a few days ago, on March 19th-20th we had the spring equinox, the beginning of the astrological new year, the Sun moving into Aries, a time that usually heralds in a wave of new energy. The day after the spring equinox, Mars and Jupiter aligned in the same sign, creating an explosion of tension and volatile energy. And then on March 22nd, Saturn moved into Aquarius after it’s two and a half years journey in Capricorn.
Let’s translate all this into meaningful information that we can use, let’s take a look at what the planets are saying to us about the energetic influences that we are under so that we can best align ourselves to it and use it constructively.
The mind is a great servant, but a terrible master.
After an intense few weeks of a very edgy Mercury retrograde, now we are in the post shadow period, still integrating all the learning the retrograde brought us. Tonight’s new moon in Sagittarius is a welcome shift from the watery Scorpio intensity to the fiery expansiveness of Sagittarius. In order to understand the planetary influence under this new moon, we first need to understand the domains of Mercury, Moon and Sagittarius. Mercury rules the mind, and our intellect (amongst other things), while the ruler of Jupiter, Sagittarius is the ruler of the higher mind. This is the aspect of our mind that is closer to our Soul, our higher consciousness.
I will describe the energy surrounding this new moon with a story.
Recently, during my travels to the amazing sacred valley in Peru, I started feeling and invoking the goddess Kālī in my Yoga practice. I didn’t go looking for her…she found me. Through my asana practice and mantras, she hunted me down and looked me straight in the eye. The archetype of the divine mother Shakti in the form of Kali is relentless. She is the goddess of death and destruction. Her most well known origin story is that when Durga was in a battle with these demons, she got so angry that through her anger Kālī was manifested into the world out of her third eye.
